Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay

Carthage High School UIL Academic Team traveled to Austin this week to compete in the STATE UIL Academic, Speech and Debate meet.
Addison Bradey, senior, competed in Editorial Writing. Addison is one of the top 12 Editorial Writers in 4-A in TEXAS! Addison also competed in several other UIL events at our District contest in March. She is not a one hit wonder! Her coach is Shannon Abernathy. Ms. Abernathy coaches five UIL Journalism events (Copy Editing, Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, Headline Writing and News Writing) in addition to her English teaching assignments at CHS.
Elizabeth Pinkston, senior, competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. This is Elizabeth's second trip to Austin this school year. She qualified for the State UIL Congress Debate meet that was in January. Elizabeth is one of the top 12 L/D Debaters in 4-A in TEXAS In addition, Elizabeth competed in Extemporaneous Persuasive Speaking at district and qualified for region in this event. Her coach is Russell Rowe. Mr. Rowe coaches five UIL Speech / Debate events (Congress Debate, Cross-Examination Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Extemp. Informative Speaking, Extemp. Persuasive Speaking) in addition to his Social Studies teaching assignments at CHS.
Ella Wolfe, junior, was the first alternate to the State UIL Academic meet. When the roll call was done in Austin, one of the qualifiers from our region was not there, she was late, Ella was at roll call and put in moments before the competition started. Ella is one of the top 16 Ready Writers in 4-A in TEXAS! She also competed in Literary Criticism at the district meet. Her Ready Writing coach is Catherine Jackson. Ms. Jackson coaches Ready Writing in addition to her English and National Honor Society assignments at CHS.
Kendall Fant, junior, was first alternate to the State UIL Poetry Interpretation. Kendall was asked to serve on the State Speech and Debate Honor Crew. Only 50 students from across Texas received this honor. While at the state tournament, Kendall was a timekeeper, runner, chairperson for her committee and was ready to perform if needed. The learning experience was well worth the extremely long hours and could not have been conveyed in the classroom. Kim Funderburk is her coach.
Reagan Beatty, sophomore, competed in Poetry Interpretation. In this contest the top three from each 4-A Region advance to the State meet. The 12 performers are divided into two sections; this is their preliminary round of competition. Each student has two selections, categories, ready for the contest. The students don't know which category they will perform until moments before the round starts. Reagan was ranked 2nd in her preliminary round. For the final round, students perform the other category of poetry for three judges. Reagan placed sixth in the final round of the UIL Poetry Interpretation State contest. In addition to Poetry Interp., she is also a member of the UIL One-Act Play company. Reagan was the only sophomore in 4-A competing in Poetry Interp. the others were upperclassmen. Her coach is Kim Funderburk. Mrs. Funderburk coaches Prose Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation. Mrs. Funderburk also directes the One-Act Play and is CHS UIL Academic Coordinator in addition to her theatre classroom assignment. Mrs. Funderburk is assisted with the Interpretation coaching duties by Sarah Funderburk, Carthage Junior High Theatre director.
Congratulations to the UIL Academic Dawgs! I have a feeling there will be many more trips to the STATE UIL Academic meet. Thank you to the 8th grade and under UIL Academic coaches for planting the seed and helping grow our amazing team. Thank you also to Mrs. Brady at Libby for organizing the first ever "send-off" for the CHS UIL Academic / Speech State Team. The Libby Elementary campus had noise makers, bells, signs and their team wore their shirts. I'm sure one of them will end up in Austin one day.
Attached are a few pictures of the trip to the State UIL Academic meet 2023. The casual one was the day before all the meetings and contests at the Hula Hut restaurant.
Proud to be a Bulldog!
